Exposition: World War Z takes us through the eyes and perspectives of the survivors of the Dark Days of World War Z the great zombie war. We follow the past events of dozens of characters and their role and survivival of the conflict that will come to claim the lives of billions and change the world forever.
Inciting Moment:
The inciting moment occurs when the readers follow the story of Kwang Jing Shu a doctor in a large Chinese Province. He is called out by a rather odd request and goes to the village only to find that the villagers have quarantined the other infected villagers. Upon closer examination he finds the victims to have bite marks, fevers and other assorted what not. He then goes to the source which is a 12 year old boy who tries to attack and bite him. He escapes and the Chinese government comes in to cover up the whole ordeal. The inciting moment continues through the perspectives of several other characters who all tell of their experiences with the spread of the living dead/zombies/infected/crazed ones/flesh eaters. The disease; which transforms ordinary humans into flesh craving monsters is spread through refugees, organ transplants, and through other means. However during this stage the exact details are still covered up. However the situation is becoming more and more drawn out.
Rising Action:
The rising action occurs when the disease is drawn out into the open and blames is spread. The disease is finally made public however during this stage it has not reached a full scale war against those bone munching brain slurping monsters that we all know and love. However panic is spreading and questions arise on how to deal with the plague. Some nations are closing their borders while others are trying to come to the aid of others. It soon becomes evident that this is not enough however as the plague spreads through nations who have taken the utmost precautions to prevent against it. It soon becomes every man for themselves and panic spreads across the world as the people try to escape from zombie hot spots or areas that would likely attract hordes of vacationing zombies. However as we all come to expect by this point, it will not be enough.
Climax:
The Climax happens at the outbreak of full scale war against the infected. Humans realize that they are fighting for the sake of humanity, for if they fall they will be exterminated by the zombie horde. Some nations unite and others fight against each other. Most of the modern nations loses critical battles to the zombies including the U.S. India, Pakistan, and Iran fight each other over zombie movements and their conflict escalates into nuclear war between the nations. The U.S loses everything east of the rockies and relocates the Capital to Honolulu Hawaii. After recovering from the initial onslaught, the United Nations (whats left of it anyway) launches a military assault to take back territories lost to the zombie horde.
Falling Action- The Falling action is tied within the chapter of "Total War." The narrator finally realizes what kind of enemy the zombie horde is and describes their relentlessness through the expression of total war. For total war there needs to be two things present. a one-hundred percent dedication from the people against its enemy. Then secondly, there must be no limit as to be pushed to. That is why this is a "Total War" against the zombie nation. In this aspect of the book as well to previous accounts we see that there are no limits at which the zombie's will stoop to. They have a relentless drive towards consuming all life which inhabits Earth, and the only way to survive from these mindless beats is by waging "Total War". The United Military campaign takes back much territory and eradicates millions of zombies through full scale war. Eventually victory is achieved with many nations decimating their zombie populations. Zombies still exist by the millions but they have been isolated and the world continues to destroy zombie hold outs.
Dénouement- In our Denouement there is quite the cliff-hanger the Narrator leaves us with. However we conclude that the war on the home front (USA) is over, with the exception of several scattered populations of the living infected. The Zombie war left billions dead with the loss of national powers and near destruction of countries such as the U.S and China. However with the formation of the UN's multinational force against zombies they are on the right track to ridding the world of the zombie infestation.
Syntax:
The syntax in this story varies greatly due to its nature as leaning more towards a documentary. Different syntax as used for each individual documentary of events.
Diction:
Diction once again varies greatly from passage to passage. The diciton used by the narrator at the rare times that his impact is seen is formatted as questions. However when he adressess the readers he uses suprisingly good diction considering the nature of the novel. The diciton used by the other characers varies depending on regional language characteristics, education, and the situation they are encountering.
Tone:
The tone used throughout the novel is rather dismal, understandably as this is by no means a happy cheerful story. We are constantly reminded of the tone with words like "destroyed", "infected", "death", and "heads blowing up". Yes the tone is quite obviously DEPRESSING in a sometimes humorous way to people with a sense of humor.
Theme:
It's pretty obvious what the theme of this story is with a title like World War Z, So were not going to explain it... just kidding. The theme is the human struggle over the survival of their race to the treacherous flesh devouring zombie horde. It depicts the destruction of the world order and the massive, huge, ginormous, mammoth, immense, tragic, and deeply upsetting loss of life. Throughout the conflict we experience the struggles of human survival in the face of adveristy.
