Exposition
Fight Club begins with Tyler and our narrator in a building rigged to blow. Tyler has a gun inside of the Narrators mouth and keeps talking about how we are in a repulsive society and how we must destroy something to realize how beautiful it was or to appreciate what was once. After Tyler counting down the time for explosion reaches five minutes we flashback to the beginning of this story, to the introduction of an unnamed recall salesman (our Narrator) for an unnamed auto company. He is a deeply depressed man suffering from insomnia by jet lag from his frequent travels from business. So for his “pain” a doctor advises him to go to the testicular cancer meeting and see real pain. After attending many meetings ranging from tuberculosis to alcoholic anonymous it makes him cry which helps him sleep and rids him of his insomnia problems.

support groups consisted of testicular cancer, tuberculosis, alcoholics anonymous, and pretty much any groups that would be acceptable to show emotion in. Marla was blocking his mind from being able to show emotion in the groups which helped him with the insomnia that he suffered from. What was once a just a club eventually became a cult that was based around the destruction of major business organizations, this was a series of bombings that was called "Project Mahem." The cult consisted of many members who were typically lower class and had worked for society and more importantly the business that were being targeted during "Project Mahem." During the course of these events our main character becomes more and more annoyed with the various violent actions of his partner Tyler Durden.
