Exposition- In this great American classic novel "Rocket Boys" we follow the story of Homer Hickam a high school student living in a coal mining town. Where few get football scholarships to go off to college, many are doomed to live the rigorous of a coal miner. Which is certainly something which Homer is not cut out for. This greatly upsets his father who is in charge of the coal production in their town and believes that Homer getting an education is pointless and should head to the mines which he is "destined" for.
Inciting Moment- Our story really catches momentum and soars to new heights when the world is introduced to the new Russian satellite Sputnik. While many see this as a threat to our country , or simply a publicity stunt, Homer finds inspiration. And along with the help of a few friends begins a dream of building a rocket themselves.
Conflicts:
(Man vs. Man) Homer vs. John(Dad)- In our story many times these two characters seem to but heads. Because Homer has a dream of building a rocket and going to college from a science fair scholarship his father thinks it's silly and is ashamed of him. And finds numerous ways to try and stop Homer and his friends dream.
(Man vs. Society) Amir vs. Society – Perhaps the most obvious conflict in our story is Homer vs. Society. Most of the town see's the Rocket Boys experiments as a waste of time and as a joke. No one at first supports them as they are experiencing epic failure. However as the Boy's gain success they also gain the towns heart and support in the end.
(Dont know why da color not be changin)
Rising Action:
The Rising action occurs when Homer realizes that he wants to build rockets. He and his friends team up with Quintan a nerdy kid and outcast in the school. Together they work to build rockets. Howevet the first rockets are unsucessful and tend to explode bringing more doubt from Homers father. They soon succed and establish their own area for launching rockets outside of town. during this time they learn more about rocketry in a town thats main focus is mining coal. The whole time Homer is under the scrutiny of his father who thinks the whole thing is a waste of time. They do have support from neighbors and his supportive school teacher Miss Riley who introduces the idea of them competing in the science fair to win a scholarship. They win their high schools science fair and move on to the national. WIth the support of his family, girlfreind, friends, and community he leaves to attend the National Science fair.
Climax:
There are really two climax's in the book. The first one comes when Homer goes to the national science fair and wins. This is important because this means that they all win scholarships and get to leave Coalwood to pursue their dreams. The other is when Homer and his friends launch the last rocket for the town and everybody including his dad is there. He was at a few others before then but this symbolizes his final approval of his sons choice in life.
Dénouement:
In the end Homer and his friends all get scholarhips and get to go to collage. This shows how hard work and dterimination can get one far in life and overcoming the odds is possible.
