Exposition-Black Hawk down is a Non-fiction military story that follows many soldiers in the Battle of Mogadishu. As the story begins we are introduced to many different characters, the Some of the characters are Major General William F. Garrison, Staff Sergeant Matt Eversmann, Mike Durant, Norm Gibson, and many more .And many different soldiers from such branches as, Delta Force, Army Rangers, and Special Operations Aviation Regiment. There inital misson was to gaurd the UN forces but many of them see the problem with this in that they cannot strike at the problem such as the warlords due to laws. In one occurence Somali milita guns down civilians in a market in front of U.S forces knowing that they cant strike back and stop them. As the problems escalate and aid groups are attacked they are given the ability to engage the militas. They launch several missons throughout their time their but they eventualy decide to take out the top warlord Mohamed Farah Aidid 

Inciting Moment-Our story soon takes flight when Major General William F. Garrison and his unit receives  their new orders. They are  to capture Mohamed Farah Aidid's and his senior subordinates in the Bakaara Market neighborhood of Mogadishu. They prepare for the assault and launch a convoy consiting of humvees into the city to capture the warlord. They also plan to drop four teams of rangers to establish a perimiter and a team of delta force in front of the target building to block all escape routes. Extra helicopters and support are airborn during this time to help out with the assault and extraction.

Rising Action- Soon after they take off on their mission and as everything is going to plan with the successful capture of the two targets, things soon take a drastic turn for the worse. Miscommunication delays the assault on the building allowing the militia to organize. The U.S forces role through the streets of Mogadishu taking some small arms fire but in general making good time and taking no casualties. The helicopeter assault begins to take rocket propelled grenade fire or RPGs early on and  one soldier falls over seventy feet when one blackhawk avoids impact with one of the RPGs. The attack already starts off bad with one man criticaly wounded (he would die hours later) and the attack beging behind schedule. Once the assault is launched the ranger and delta force teams quickly dispatch the enemies gaurding the building and load the prisoners on to the convoy to escape. During this time all elemetns of the assault force are taking automatic, and RPG fire.

 

 Climax- The climax occurs fairly early on and last during a long period of the book. It occurs when the Black

Hawk helicopter super six one is shot down over mogadishu. The ranngers and delta force were alreay taking small arms fire but the loss of the helicopter changed everything. The convoy leading the prisoners out takes heavy fire from Somalian militia and civilians. Meanwhile the survivors from super six one are forced to fight off the militia. the convoy takes several casualties and become lost in the streets of Mogadishu.  The assault force splits up with some escorting the convoy out and the rest to rescue the survivors from super 61. To make matters worse another blackhawk super six four is shot down. when they reached super 61 the find the pilots dead and five wounded. They are forced to dig in for the night inside nearby homes. Two Delta Force snipers Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon were inserted at the second crash site, but can not remove the only survivor Michael Durant who is trapped in the helicopter. they are overrun and killed and Durant is taken prisoner. The battered convoy led by Matt Eversmann back to the base. the commanders begin building a force of over one hundred vehicles consisting of Saudi American and Malaysian UN forces. Meanwhile those left in the city are forced to fend off the militia for the night.

 Falling Action-  this is when teh Ranger and Delta forces have to fight to survive the night. at night

US helicoters strafe the city and try to knock out resistance. their attacks simmered down after experiencing the unrelenting firepower by the American forces. in the morning the massive UN convoy including Saudi tanks plows into the city and rescues all but one of the surviving assault force.

 (FRENCH WORD)-  Michael Durant is treated well and released to the US a few weeks later out of fear

of experiencing reprisals from the US military. Warlord Mohamed Farah Aidid is killed three years later by rival factions. Nineteen US rangers Delta force and Navy seals members were killed and nearly one hundred wounded. the Somali casualties remain debated but the book states that between one thousand and fifteen hundred somalis were killed in the fighting with another three thousand wounded. the Somalis considered this a victory and all UN forces and aid groups pulled out within two years. 

 syntax-

the syntax of the book involves changes of sentence structure when the book makes the transition from just narration between the regiments and when the actual battle is taking place. A lot of onomatoepoeia is used during the fighting scenes.

 

 Diction-

 the diction in the story can be thoroughly challenging to understand if you have no militay knowledge, many terms from the military are used. also the novel includes many inappropriate words which ties into the novel very well in that it shows the true panic that these soldiers had to endure.

 

 tone-

the tone of the story is one of chaos and loyalty to fellow comrades, it exmplifies the true nature of battle and the mental and physical struggles of war.

 

 theme-

the theme of the story is war and battle against imposing odds. this novel puts you right in the heart of a military battle and depicts the real nature of war.

 

conflict-

the conflict of the story would be man versus man.the conflict is between the US special forces and later other UN forces against the Somali militia and civilian populace.
